Audit Log Reports issue in sharepoint 2010

When enabling audit log reports, there were a couple of issues faced, given below

1.       I could not find the Audit Log Reports link in Site Collection Administration.
Enabled it using stsadm as given in the below link

2.       When trying to generate audit reports or when trying to click Browse to select the location, I was getting an error "An unexpected error has occurred” with a correlation id.
a.       As mentioned in sites, I checked in ULS logs for the description – The ULS logs can be found in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS
b.      There was an exception related to Search
c.       Checked the Search Service, it was enabled. But the search did not work in the site. So deleted and enabled Search service in central admin.(refer mail in team repository)
d.      Search was tested in site and it  is working.
e.      The unexpected error kept coming still. So checked the ULS log again.
f.        In ULS log check for the correlation id and got a description “ tkau             Unexpected                System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.    at Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing.Internal.WebControls.ObjectSerializer.evaluateTestAutomationId(CachedList cachedListToEval)     at Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing.Internal.WebControls.ObjectSerializer.get_AutomationId()     at Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing.Internal.WebControls.EcbEnabledTreeNode.RenderPreText(HtmlTextWriter writer)     at System.Web.UI.WebControls.TreeNode.Render(HtmlTextWriter writer, Int32 position, Boolean[] isLast, Boolean enabled)     at System.Web.UI.WebControls.TreeNode.RenderChildNodes(HtmlTextWriter writer, Int32 depth, Boolean[] isLast, Boolean enabled)     at System.Web.UI.WebControls.TreeNode.Render(HtmlTextWriter writer, Int32 position, Boolean[] isLast, Boolean enable...       2ce915c9-318c-4d5c-ada5-104056c1b48e”
g.       As per the sites referred, first checked if Reporting feature is enabled in the site collection. It was enabled. So disabled, iisreset and enabled it. Did not work
h.      One other site mentioned it for Publishing feature, did the above steps- did not work
i.         Disabled and enabled most of the important features already enabled in the site. It did not make any difference. (Link refered http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ar/sharepoint2010setup/thread/419fd9e7-d548-4420-add4-3707db84e61f)
j.        Then as given in this site, using powershell got the Id’s of list in the main site. Then checked which list is creating an issue. Found that there was a list BugsTest which was the culprit. Removed it as per the link. Issue resolved!! (Link Refered - http://www.tylercranston.com/2011/11/cqwp-and-manage-content-and-structure.html)

  1. Hi,

could you check the link from step j? I'm suffering from the some error but haven't been able to solve it yet. And the last link seems like beeing my last help, reading the description of step j.

    Many thanks!

Cannot open SharePoint 2010 Approval task form from Outlook

When trying to click on Open this task from Outlook 2010, it brings an error - " Outlook cannot open a new form. The form contains schema validation errors" Element '{ http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml}div ' is unexpected according to the content model of parent element '{ http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/infopath/2009/WSSList/dataFields}Body '. As given in the error message, the issue is with the Body column of the workflow tasks list. For the approval workflow, there would be a tasks list. In the workflow task list, the Body column is Enhance Rich multi-line column. Change the setting to Plain text, instead of enhanced rich text. After that do an iisreset.

How to link to Download a copy option in Office 365/SharePoint 2013

At times it is required to have the option to save a copy of a document uploaded in SharePoint document library, in a page or a webpart. The url to get the save option for a doc is - http:// site /_layouts/download.aspx?SourceUrl= url-of-document-in-library Change the bold text with the actual url, i.e., with the site url and the url to the doc in the doc library. For example, if the site is www.contso.com and the doc "Test" is uploaded in SiteAssets library, the url to save a copy would be - http://contso.com/_layouts/download.aspx?SourceUrl=http://contso.com/SiteAssets/Test.docx

Examples of utility function in SPD 2010 workflows

In SPD workflows, under Actions, there is a set of Utility functions. Using the substring function, a string can be trimmed from the beginning/end/or from a position, with or without specifying the length. An example, to remove the domain part from the user name, e.g. abcdomain/username, follow the below steps 1.        Use “Extract substring from the index of string” 2.        It would insert a step in WF as “Copy from string , starting at 0 (Output to Variable: substring ) 3.        Click on ‘string’ and click fx to get the field to be trimmed. 4.        It would bring the look-up window. 5.        Select the field and click OK. In this e.g., Data Source: Current Item and Field from Source: Created By 6.        To set the index, click on 0 and enter the required number, here it would be 1...
